about

This track came from the porch on a rainy day. In recent years, rain has been a rare event in central Texas, but we had an unusually wet fallin 2018. We have been lucky, but It is with a familiar sense of dread that I watch with my phone's radar Florence dump water like Harvey did just last year upon an already sodden soil.

With the first shower in the fall, we see a burst of Oxblood or Schoolhouse lilies, so named for their color and their coinciding with the start of the school year, spring up as if from nowhere forming a kind of jubilant red streak in our front yard. These flowers are rarely seen outside of Texas and brought likely here from Argentina by a wild harvest by the botanist Peter Henry Oberwetter who grew them on his farm near Comfort, Texas. He settled in Austin around 1878 and died in 1915.

Of course in Texas, the flower most associated with fall and by extension with football of course, homecoming games is the chrysanthemum. And when festooned with ribbons, cowbells, and rabbit's feet, and worn on your chest most commonly on young women or on the arm as a garter most commonly for men, the flowers name which was christened by none other than Karl Linnaeus in 1753 as a contradiction of "Chryos" meaning "gold" and “anthemon” meaning flower, is merely referred to in many a high school hallway here simply as "mums." The Japanse have venerated the flower for about 3000 years and as with most things, the Chinese wrote about these blooms about 500 years before the Japanese.

Our Oxbloods shrivel up about a week after they bloom and then fully retreat into our patchy St. Augustine grass only to surprise again with each first autumn rain.
