Recorded on 3.22.2020 at the Purple Martin Sanctuary in Austin, Texas.
Part 1 of a series of recordings I made in my neighborhood's Purple Martin "Sanctuary." Purple Martins are migratory birds that fly from southern Canada to Brazil. They are secondary cavity nesters, using existing structures like saguaro cacti or old holes made by woodpeckers for their nests. Thousands of years ago, indigenous peoples created ready-made nests from hollowed-out gourds to attract families of birds.

They make a beautiful racket. They sound like they are having a pitched battle with tiny laser guns.

This first recording is a layering of three improvisations. It is definitely best listened to in headphones to hear the space the birds inhabit and the guitar textures panning from left to right. The images, taken at the site, are also layered. The distortions are created by rearranging the characters of the code from each constituent image file.
